life Schreiadler: Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is an European network of protected areas based on the Flora-Fauna -Habitat Directive of 1992 and the Birds Directive of 1979.

It protects animal and plant species and their habitats (SCI = Site of Community Importance). There are Special Protected Areas for birds (SPA). FFH and bird sanctuaries can also overlap spatially.

The network serves the long-term protection of biodiversity within the EU. In 2009 the network comprised about 25,000 sites with a size that corresponded to about 18 % of the land area of the EU Member States at this time. In Brandenburg, 27 European bird sanctuaries and 620 SACs are currently reported.
